How did this Spam Musubi Bowl come about? Well, it’s been raining on and off the couple of days in Los Angeles, and you know what that means — no one here knows what to do with themselves ? you know what I mean, we wear coats and beanies as soon as the temperature is under 70 degrees lmao and I’m not going to lie… I was missing the sunshine (I know, so dramatic).

Let me let you inside of my head for a second. I was on the treadmill and opened the blinds, saw the rain and immediately thought about Hawaii. Sunny beaches, tropical landscape.. and it led me to thinking about eating Spam musubi and then I started to crave it ?. And that’s how this spam Musubi bowl came to life a la krizkitch.

The salty spam covered in a sweet and savory teriyaki sauce, paired with white rice, seaweed and egg. The Mayo acts like the “macaroni salad” component. It’s the perfect combination. I hope you try this bowl, because it’s one of my favorite things I’ve made so far in my kitchen.

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients. Microwave for 1 minute to allow sugar to melt. Give it a good mix and set aside.

  2. In a non stick frying pan over low to med/low heat, add spam (1 can). Cook until crispy and brown. This part is the most time consuming about 5-10 min.

I wiped off excess oil with a paper towel to try to be a tiny bit healthier ? Hey! Any effort counts.

  3. Once nice, browned and crisp to your liking, add in about 3/4 of the sauce, saving some for plating.

  4. Stir fry until sauce has coated all spam pieces and becomes a little sticky. Remove from heat.

  5. Serve with white rice & top rice with furikake. Top spam with extra teriyaki sauce to your preference. Add in strips or crushed seaweed, rolled egg, mayo ( dollop), and green onions, if using. Eat immediately.
